Where are you? University of Florida has people expert in treating TMJ. There is one Dentist in Orlando who is really expert. As for any other locations, don't know. You need to talk to a first-rate Dentist or Oral Surgeon and get advice about who is best in your area. Most of the Major Medical Schools will have people knowledgeable in TMJ by now.

There are TMJ specialists, just call your insurance company. One thing they can do is look at the alignment of your jaw to see if it's off. If it is, the specialist can create a night time device to help your jaw remain in a good place as you sleep. DO NOT buy an OTC mouth guard. In most cases, they can make matters worse. If it's unaligned properly, they have something called Invisiline now, which is virtually invisible and is better than braces. Also, try a pillow that applies more neck support. Many TMJ cases are due to poor posture and sleep positioning. Good luck, I know it sucks. Hang in there.

Ahh i grind my teeth yes. Do you do it at night time or in the day time though?

Because in the day time your teeth are actually not sposed to touch when resting. Im not sure how to stop you from grinding in the day - maybe just a nervous habbit that you need to control yourself over.

But night time? this is a VERY big problem. And i do it too. My dentist picked up on the fact that my teeth had been grinded away. You can get your dentist to make a mould to put over your teeth and sleep with it on. It's comfortable because it's moulded to fit.

After a year of wearing it it's basically all worn away, and i'm very glad im grinding IT rather than my teeth!

Other than this im not sure of any other ways to stop grinding teeth.

Hope this helps =D

You mentioned an aversion to something "cumbersome and uncomfortable", but a dentist can fix you up with a customized mouthguard that is soft and (once you get used to it), comfortable. Grinding your teeth can lead to a loss of enamel, which opens you up for infections and cavities.
